DTS, the abbreviated format of Digital Theater System, is a series of multichannel audio technology developed by DTS, Inc. It generally adopts the 5.1-channel surround system. In addition to the standard 5.1-chanel DTS Surround codec, DTS, Inc. had developed several other technologies to compete with other similar systems. The most used technology in DVD/Blu-ray is the DTS-HD Master Audio, which has steadily become the standard lossless audio format for Blu-ray disc format exclusively.
The main competitor of DTS in multichannel theatrical audio on DVDs and theater system is Dolby Digital, the widely known technology of which is Dolby TrueHD Audio. It is an advanced lossless multichannel audio codec intended primarily for HD home entertainment like Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD. It also uses the 5.1-channel audio track.
Both DTS-HD Master Audio and Dolby TreuHD Audio contain 2 data streams: the original core stream and the additional “residual” stream. The core streams of them are DTS (1500kbps) and DOBLY DIGITAL (640kbps) respectively.
